Matthew Sweet: Girlfriend

Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend is a pure pop masterpiece. If you don't understand this, I don't understand you. I think the rest of his records are crap, but this is a really great album. New Pornographers must have had this cd on repeat circa '91/'92. The title track is especially an all-time favorite of mine. Go buy it. (Sorry. There's no witty analysis. I'm still in a funk, trying to force the creativity.)

(Does anyone remember Buzz Clips?)

Altered Beast is pretty good too. It's no Girlfriend, though.

I really love that album, too. :)

I was never big on the video, so I'd never seen this before. I think the last full video I actually watched was the one for that bouncy George Harrison cover song, with the singing boar's head, or something (what was that, 1989, or so?). This one, however, was one that I should have watched. I have to agree that this was and is an awesome album, and the video reinforces that awesomeness and confirms what I thought all along. "Girlfiend" was really about an outer space cartoon love affair. The way the lyrics and the video reinforce each other--this is why I kick myself for not paying attention to the art form. ;)
