#10 of 2008: Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams

Thirty-Two Words: Dan Bejar, the best songwriter in the New Pornos, released the second-best Merge release of this year and that's saying something. It's strange and magical, everything we shouldn't like but we do.

The Moment of Truth: When I realized that all my favorite songs from The New Pornographers' Challengers were written by Bejar, I knew this would be one of my favorites of the year.

Killer to Filler Ratio: 8:3

This album is one of the least inspiring things he's done (I mean that in a good way). Sometimes there's some heavy, esoteric stuff to wade through, but City of Daughters through Notorious Lightning is considered his prime material. Rubies is the crossover hit that all the mp3 bloggers thought was a debut until they checked Wikipedia. Streethawk is the fan favorite, but This Night is probably his greatest artistic peak. The song "Notorious Lightning" is also very much worth sampling on iTunes.

Thanks for the 411. I'm actually pretty new to Bejar. This album provided more of a promise for me than an actual delivery, thus keeping it out of my top-5.
